Abstract: This paper describes the development of Quantitative Linguistics (QL) in Germany and Austria since the beginning of the 20th century. It starts with the works by Thumb and Kaeding, which were focused on word and syllable frequencies. Next, it traces the rise of QL from the mid-century and finally the mature discipline of QL, which combines theoretical considerations with empirical investigations. The further development of the latter approach is owed to the activities of the German linguist G. Altmann.
