Abstract: Appreciative and Axiological modalities belong to a specifically Francophone tradition. They correspond to the expressive function of language, the expression of value judgments. The modal perspective, introduced by Brunot (1922) and Bally (1932), leads to a precise structuring, on the basis of explicit linguistic criteria, of these notions. This work shows the advantage of distinguishing between appreciative and axiological modalities, as well as between extrinsic modalities and modalities intrinsic to the dictum.
