  • Abstract: This article presents how the ´Observatório de Neologismos do Português Brasileiro Contemporâneo, or the Observatory of neologisms in contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, was created at the University of São Paulo. Since 1993, the Observatory has been examining how new words enter into Brazilian Portuguese based on a written press corpus made up of newspapers and magazines widely-circulated throughout Brazil. Firstly the various methodologies used over the years are presented, and the role of IT in their optimization is underlined. The results obtained, which are available for consultation on the project website (www.fflch.usp.br/dlcv/neo), show the most frequent modes of word formation used, and which prefixes and suffixes are the most used in present-day Brazilian Portuguese. There is no question that Brazilian Portuguese undergoes the influence of certain languages such as French, Spanish, Italian, Japanese and especially from English, but the evidence shown in the base shows how dynamic Portuguese is in naming all the new developments of present-day life and of science and technology.
