CHRONIQUES ET COMPTES RENDUS

A Major New Journal for 1988
/NTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF LEXICOGRAPHY

We live in a golden age of Lexicography, as evidenced by the recent proliferaàon of major historical and regional dictionaries, learners' dictionaries, mono- and bi-lingual dictionaries, and projects such as the New Oxford English Dictionary.
At the saure rime, the subject is becoming increasingly interdisciplinary. Lexicographers now find themselves sharing concerna with theoretical and applied linguists, philosophera, psychologists, computer and artificiel intelligence specialists. In recent years, several lexicographic reseazch institutes have been founded and national and international lexicographic associations have tome into existence. There is now no doubt that Lexicography is a subject of theoreàcal as well as commercial and social importance.
In 1988, Oxford University Press will launch a major new quarterly journal. The International Journal oj Lexicography will be edited by Dr Robert ILSON, a long-rime consultant on Lexicography, and an Honorary Research Fellow of University College London, backed by an editorial board which is botte intemaàonal and interdisciplinary. The International Journal of Lexicography will be concemed with all aspects of Lexicography, theoretical and pracàcal, diachronic and synchronic. Its scope will include dictionaries of all types -- general and specialised, monolingual and bilingual -- and other lexically oriented reference works, such as thesauruses, phrase books, usage guides, concordances, and glossaries. The journal will be interested in the organisation of lexicographic projects and of dictionary publishing, the use of dictionaries, the recruitment and training of lexicographers, and the development of Lexicography as a profession.
The journal will also be concerned to include articles from disciplines relevant to Lexicography, such as lexicology, terminology, semantics, pragmatics, linguistics, language-teaching methodology, philosophy, psychology, computer science, and artificiel intelligence.

In recognition of the international character of lexicography and the importance of dictionaries in many cultures, the International Journal of Lexicography will welcome contributions from all countries, and will consider material written in any language.
The International Journal of Lexicography will appeal not just to lexicographers, but also to those working in linguistics, phonetics, language-teaching, computer science, and artificial intelligence. For people involved in the comptez areas where these disciplines overlap, the International Journal of Lexicography will soon become essential reading.

Full instructions to authors are given on request.
Please rend submissions to Dr Robert ILSON, 58 Antrim Mansions, Antrim Road, London NW3 4XU.

LEXICOGRAPHICA SERTES MAIOR

THE FIRST 20 VOLUMES

When almost five years ago H. E. WIEGAND proposed the idea of a double Series in the field of lexicography, many of us were rather sceptical. Since then, experience has proved that he was right to take the risk  :the 3 volumes of Lexicographica. International Annual for Lexicography together with the 20 volumes in the Lexicographica. Series Maior now
available touer all the major aspects in the theory and pracàce of dicàonary making.
As one of the seven editors of the Series Maior (and for the carrent year in the driver's seat of the 'Gesch~ftsführender Herausgeber'), I cannot help but being pleased about our record so far. The list below covers most issues in the field, broken down into the following 'genres' 5 volumes of conference and seminar proceedings, 4 volumes on historical themes, 3 volumes of critical documentation, 3 reprint editions of dictionaries, 2 volumes on computational topics, 1 volume each on usage issues and the treatment of paràcles, and one introductory textbook.

International in outlook, multilingual in conception and scholazly in treatment, the Series Maior has effectively become a universal discussion forum and a basic training librazy for the serious student of Lexicography. Among the forthcoming or planned tilles are a general bibliography, a book on the value of illustrations in both the dictionary and the encyclopedia, another set of proceedings from the Copenhagen Symposium, and collected essays by famous authorities in the field. One long-terni dream of the editors, to encourage the application of at least sonie of the principles discussed in other volumes to the compilation of new dictionaries, is coming tme when we publish a Chinese-English dictionary of idioms and proverbs in 1988.
