  • Abstract: Modern critics like to emphasize how much recognition scenes resemble a hermeneutic operation. This article aims to show that the author of the Aethiopica and that of Leucippe shared this intuition. By making attribution dependent on recognition, or by imbuing recognition scenes with characteristic philological elements, the two authors demonstrated the proximity of the two processes and questioned the methods of textual attribution in the imperial era.
