  • Abstract: This article analyzes the distinctive treatment of anagnorisis—recognition as described by Aristotle in his Poetics—in Terence Cave’s theoretical study, recently translated into French. The “scandal” of recognition, narrative as well as dramatic, brings into question the epistemic value accorded to literary texts and at the same time challenges critics’ claims that they can “recognize” what is hidden in the works they comment on.
