Abstract: It is obvious that the story of the French Revolution looms large in all the novels that Nodier published before 1818. However, Nodier refuses to write historical novels: he oscillates between this genre and the Wertherian sentimental novel, where nature occupies a central role. This article is dedicated to analyzing where these two genres, opposites in principle, meet.
