Abstract: In the course of thirty odd years and in spite of geographical differences in different countries, Dumas looks kindly on the natives. The other is not only seen as exotic in Dumas’ travel narratives, he has a face and a story, he is only superficially exotic. For Dumas race is about people but not about a man. Racial theory, good-natured as it may appear, does not survive meeting a person.
