Abstract: The plot of Les Trois mousquetaires is moved to Europe in the 1940s. This appropriation, accompanied by a humorous form of distancing, verging on pastiche, invites readers to revel in the collusion. But both novels nonetheless depict Nazi horror, madness, and monstrosity with a form of derealization that works like a distorting mirror—grotesque but not negative at all.
