Abstract: Written by Paul Claudel when he was in Brazil (he stayed in Rio de Janeiro from 1917 to 1918), La Messe là-bas constitutes a long and intimate poem, but can also be read as a spiritual drama in three acts. Such reading is adopted in the present article.
