Anne-Claire Bello, “Interview with Sylvie Germain on Paul Claudel”
The interview with Sylvie Germain reveals how sensitive she is to some motifs in the Claudelian work: the breath as an immense symphony of the world, the struggle with the angel, the oblique filiations.
Keywords: breath, angel, filiation, spirituality, voice.
Anne-Claire Bello, “Paul Claudel and Sylvie Germain, two primitives of modernity?”
The article explores the play of the primitive and the modern in the construction of a liminarity characteristic of the work of Paul Claudel and Sylvie Germain. He observes how the two authors, despite different eras and genres, write within the border to build a permanent posture of adjustment between the religious and the secular, the unspeakable and the language, the original and the subject, the primitive and the modern.
Keywords: Sylvie Germain, Liminarity, Intempestif, Posture, Inexpressible.
Flora Souchard, “‘Animals at work on the world’. The Chinese bestiality in Connaissance de l’Est”
This study reports on the omnipresence of beasts in Connaissance de l’Est. Whether metaphorical, sculpted or real, they shed light on the organicity of cities, landscapes and writing: primitive China, as described by Claudel, reveals the lineaments of its civilisation through the prism of its relationship to animality. “Le Porc”, the height of untranslatability, thus becomes, through its digging activity, a hermeneutic model for the poet who probes these geographical confines.-
Keywords: Asia, animality, alterity, exoticism, pig.
Thomas Bruckert, “The drama disrupted by the stage. About some of Claudel’s unruly characters”
This study analyses the way in which, towards the end of the 1920s, metatheatricality in Claudelian theatre became more marked, particularly through the introduction of characters (or collective characters such as choirs) who interrupt the action and disrupt the performance, instilling a power of disorder, indiscipline and improvisation. The 105“primitivity” of Claudelian theatre is therefore approached here from a perspective that is more dynamic than thematic.
Keywords: Metatheatricality, representation, metatheatrical character, chorus, improvisation, primitivism.
Olivier Belin, “Claudel’s mistake. Sketch of a poetics of incorrectness”
This article is interested in the way Claudel revalorizes the grammar mistake, attributing rhythmic and energetic functions to it. For the poet, syntactic incorrectness is indeed the sign of the primary expressiveness of language. Welcoming the incorrectness enables to translate an energy characteristic of orality, seen as the source of language and poetry. In this sense, Claudel joins a literary primitivism explored by writers such as Nerval, Aragon or Larbaud.
Keywords: Paul Claudel, Poetics, Grammatical error, Language, Primitivism.
