Abstract: As a professional Claudel was a “contemplator of the letter”. In the editions of his own works he took the greatest care of the quality of the printing, the typography and the illustrations. To him a book was at the same time “the receptacle of the thought” and an objet d’art, the material, texture and adorment of which he appreciated as a connoisseur. Claudel is interested in both the physiology and the philosophy of books, which are material objects and spiritual instruments.
