Abstract: What political and dramatic reasons explain why romantic playwrights have not represented Montaigne, while he appears in historical scenes of Vitet Les États de Blois in 1827 and the tragedy of Arnault Catherine de Médicis aux États de Blois in 1829? In these plays, Montaigne is the symbol of a critical wisdom about political power. Playwrights do not want to have problems with censorship and prefer strong passions on the stage.
