Abstract: The presentation and historical contextualisation of a Spanish translation of the Essays by Michel de Montaigne, dated 1634, if not before this year, is the main objective of this paper. Although it is only a partial version, the manuscript of Pruevas de Miguel de Montaña, now in the Biblioteca da Ajuda in Lisbon, is important to show the initial reception of Montaigne's work in Iberian aristocratic and court circles around the 1630s.
