Abstract: The essay analyses what Montaigne writes about la confidence avec le mourir. From his primitive Stoic-type approach to De l’exercitation, where conceptual permeability life/death is exalted as a consequence of the well-known horse fall, the essay traces a route in which the metamorphic passages that had carried Montaigne from the unconscious to the consciousness mark the march of a Natura Naturans that follows a process both destructive and vital.
