Abstract: This article shows that, contrary to what he suggests in the Essays, Montaigne could read Greek. It then comments on the annotations made by Montaigne on Giraldi's De deis gentium (Basel, J. Oporin, 1548). Drawing on the work of Alain Legros on this copy, this contribution analyses the use that the young Montaigne made of the compilations, a use no different from that of Rabelais.
