Abstract: Despite many mentions of horse and horse-riding in the Essays, very few studies have been conducted on the equestrian theme. This paper is an attempt to consider the importance of the equestrian vocabulary in Montaigne’s book, a not well-known aspect of the « dictionnaire tout à part [s]oy », in which Montaigne turns out to be a true « homme de cheval ». Horse-riding provides a metaphorical material that gives the work its unique style.
