Abstract: The production of a « sound » or « aural » version of the 1595 Essays edition, « Montaigne at its own pace », led to some modification of the text to make it readable and comprehensible without translating it. It offers some lessons on the language of Montaigne, provided that the latest normative corrections by Marie de Gournay, do not cast doubt on the ultimate choices of the author in terms of lexicon, syntax and punctuation, and therefore on the rhythm that he intended to give to his sentences.
