Abstract: In spite of his discreet temperament, Vigny’s correspondence shows him to be a man of the world, full of playfulness and urbanity, fond of pleasant, picturesque and humorous touches. He writes letters as though colluding with reality, engaging it in a pleasant and useful chat, expressing his need for reciprocation in heart and spirit, in Attic mode. Keeping in touch with current affairs, giving advice, sharing friendship—his relationship with others displays love for humanity in the face of our transitory human condition.
