Abstract: This analysis of Djebar’s representation of the “pain of others” focuses on: her aesthetics; her poetic translation of the materiality of the real; and her effort to develop a probing rather than political historiography of Algerian literature. This work stresses her art of transgressive transmission in which the entangled emotions of joy and sadness are the indispensable factors of social and national cohesion beyond the depravity of politics.
