Abstract: Édouard Manet, father of Impressionism, is good deserving heir of the revolutionary Romanticism of Théodore Géricault, as two paintings allow to decipher it. The look which they shared on the suicide – the syndrome of Chatterton – shows the stakes in this political act of faith as much as claiming, by the artists, in the right for originality.
