Claude Duret’s quest for the wonders of natureA study of the iconographic set of the Histoire admirable des plantes et herbes esmerveillables & miraculeuses en nature
Abstract: Following his commentary on « Eden », the first book of the Seconde Semaine by Du Bartas, Claude Duret published in 1605 a « Histoire admirable des plantes et herbes esmerveillables & miraculeuses en nature » particulary focused on the extraordinary sensibility of plants. But the discourse of wonder is conveyed through an iconographic set resulting from a complex blend of a selection of recycled pictures on the one hand and more original figures on the other.
