Abstract: This essay considers maquettes as design aids in civil engineering. It proposes categorizing them in terms of function and analyzes them from a construction history perspective. The focus is on technical models and their preservation in public collections and archives. It argues for a reevaluation of these unique witnesses of engineering science, and promotes new ways of conserving and scientifically investigating them.
