  • Abstract: How does one build—or rather how does one rebuild in the aftermath of an earthquake? This contribution analyzes eight ancient texts (first century BC–mid-sixth century) that highlight four types of knowledge addressing earthquakes: observation, prevention, repair, and simulation. All these elements help to clarify the development of a seismic culture, exploring the relationship between construction and risk in Roman times.
