Abstract: Homosexuality is not dealt with as an independent topic in À rebours. It is subtly integrated into a project of sensual disruption. In the dialectic of the natural and the artificial, it could be described as counternature, following the reversal of antiphysis; but Huysmans proposes an additional degree of difficulty by resorting to the forces of détournement performed by pseudophysis. The writer's journey first exploits pornography before turning into something that is more subtly erotic.
