This article deals with the subject of description in the poetry of Mallarmé, for whom the referential function of language as used to express thoughts and natural objects is incompatible with poetry. This does not mean that he avoids describing objects. This apparent contradiction is explored through an analysis of the “Tryptique” sonnets, focusing attention on the techniques of description used by the poet.
