There are many portraits of Mallarmé in terms of paintings and drawings. Three- dimensional representations of the poet are much rarer. The recent discovery of a bust of Mallarmé by the Swiss sculptor Maurice Reymond de Broutelles which only survives as a black and white photo of the original taken in 1903 is discussed in this article which follows the genesis of the work as revealed by letters exchanged between the sculptor and Mallarmé’s daughter.
