In line with his theoretical writings, Mallarmé constructed the ‘Sonnet en X’ like a crystal, like architecture, or like a book of magic spells. He used a variety of ‘constraints’ : a consonant anagram, letters in a mirror or echoes or paronamases… He engraved names – his in the middle – in accordance with the onomastic tradition. Thus, in this game between form and sense, the Sonnet en X is truly an allegory of itself which introduces the prismatic subdivision of the idea of the Coup de Dés.
