Publishing this Essai sur Goethe reminds us of the contradictory and chaotic reception of the German poet at the end of the nineteenth century, and allows us to situate Edouard Rod in the current of the Lansonian school, whose objectives he takes on without neglecting the contribution of Schopenhauer and Brunetière.
