Coopetition among wine-producing unions highlights the role of managing the tensions surrounding AO or designations of origin. Two axes, the orientation of coopetition and the perception of transactions, help distinguish between coopetition oriented towards cooperation, which defends and values typicity, and coopetition oriented towards competition, which protects idiosyncrasy. In Champagne, while the Syndicat des Vignerons is governed by cooperation, the Union des Maisons protects the brands of its members.
