The hysteric, the pious woman, the madman, the criminal, and the writer are all, in Zola’s work, “beasts of confession”, and the subject of this work. Supported by a study of the human sciences of the era, it argues for a narrative programme at the heart of this desire to “tell all” which the characters accomplish without realising.
