This study looks at how two travellers tried to translate the Brazilian reality. After situating the travel writing genre, we will examine strategies for translating Brazilian reality in Expilly’s Le Brésil tel qu’il est and Walle’s Au pays de l’or noir. This will be based on Laplantine’s notion of ethnographic description, Jakobson’s model for “interlingual translation” as well as the classification categories established by Newmark and Aixelá.
