The original French reception of Teresa of Ávila’s writings was influenced by translations by Jean de Brétigny (1601), Élisée de Saint-Bernard (1630) and Cyprien de la Nativité (1667) before the classic version by Arnauld d’Andilly (1670). The history of these translations is to be read in light of conceptions of the art of translation as well as the political orientation underpinning these translations.
