One of the peculiarities of sacred texts from the Jewish tradition written in Hebrew is the amphibological dimension of this language ’ s three-letter roots. On top of a text ’ s polysemy, there is the amphibology–or double meaning–that remains unresolved by the context in which it appears. Taking part in the tradition of translation is what allows amphibology to be uncovered, when we compare translations that have appeared throughout history.
The philosopher Claude Tresmontant (1925-1997), the author of many works about Biblical Hebrew and Septuagint Greek, was led to reconsider the foundations of the dominant exegesis of the Gospel. He maintains that the four Gospels are literal, word-for-word translations of earlier Hebrew documents, and insists that there must have been one or several Hebrew-Greek lexicons that the translators used.
460Francine Kaufmann, « L’approche juive de la traduction. Les livres de sainteté »
La traduction du texte sacré dans le judaïsme oscille entre respect révérenciel et familiarité quasi sensuelle. La Thora s’adressant à tous s’accompagne de commentaires et traductions. Cet article retrace l’histoire de la traduction synagogale et des sources rabbiniques, et distingue interprétation orale où original et traduction sont coprésents, et traduction écrite, rendue indispensable par les aléas de l’Histoire.
The translation of Jewish sacred texts varies between deep respect and a somewhat sensual familiarity. The Torah, which is addressed to everyone, is accompanied by commentaries and translations. This article retraces the history of synagogue translation and rabbinical sources, and distinguishes oral interpretation, where the original and translation are both present–from written translation, which was made indispensable by the vicissitudes of History.
Cyril Aslanov,« Quand la traduction se languit de l’original… »
L’article analyse la rémanence de la langue source au sein de la langue cible. Cette rémanence peut être la conséquence soit d’un respect extrême vis-à-vis du texte traduit, soit d’un décalage entre une langue mûre et riche et une langue en phase de construction au lexique technique et scientifique encore incomplet, ou bien d’une intégration d’un fort contingent de mots provenant de la langue source, en amont de l’acte de traduction.
This article analyzes the way a source language is preserved by the target language. This can either be the consequence of extreme respect for the translated text, or the gap between a mature and rich language and a language that is still being developed, which does not yet have a technical and scientific lexicon, or it can be due to the inclusion of a strong contingent of words from the source language prior to the act of translation.
Marc de Launay, « Genèse 1 – quel “texte” traduire ? »
Le texte de Genèse 1 pose d’abord la question de son interprétation. Or celle-ci dépend de la reconnaissance du statut accordé au texte selon les confessions, et de l’arrière-plan herméneutique adopté. Deux conceptions de l’interprétation sont en conflit constant depuis plusieurs siècles : l’herméneutique « universelle » – qui se veut plus et autre chose qu’une méthode, et l’herméneutique générale (ou critique) qui accepte d’être une méthode.
461From the beginning, the text of the first chapter of Genesis raises the question of how to interpret it. This depends on the recognition of the status accorded to the text by a given religious group and depends on the hermeneutical background that one adopts. Two conceptions of interpretation have been in constant conflict for several centuries: a “universal” hermeneutics, which aspires to be more than and different from a method, and a general (or critical) hermeneutics, which accepts being a method.
What Bible are we reading today? The Masoretic text; the Samaritan version of the Pentateuch; or the Greek translation by the Seventy? The discovery of manuscripts at Qumran proves the existence not of three texts, but of a single fluid text circulating in the final centuries before our era, a text whose forms varied and which underwent a slow religious sedimentation that cemented the way it was read.
Alexandra Sfoini, « Traduire la Bible en grec moderne. Tradition et innovation »
L’Ancien Testament, dans la version de la Septante et le Nouveau Testament écrit dans la « koiné » hellénistique furent admis comme écrits inspirés et canoniques par l’Église officielle grecque. Toute nouvelle traduction était vue comme déviation. Cette contribution présente les traductions, adaptations et paraphrases de la Bible en grec moderne, à partir du xvie siècle, du point de vue historique, socioculturel et linguistique.
The version of the Old Testament by the Seventy and the New Testament written in Koine Greek were accepted by the official Greek Church as inspired and canonical writings. Every new translation was seen as a deviation. This contribution presents the translations, adaptations, and paraphrases of the Bible in Modern Greek (since the sixteenth century) from a historical, socio-cultural and linguistic point of view.
462Jean Canavaggio, « Introduction.
This article presents the circumstances under which the Libro de la Vida has been translated–several times since the seventeenth century. Next explained is what led the author to create a new translation of this work on the occasion of the publication in 2012 by Bibliothèque de la Pléiade of a selection of texts by Teresa of Ávila and John of the Cross.
Roland Béhar, « Les premières traductions de Thérèse d’Avila dans la France du Grand Siècle »
La première réception française des écrits de Thérèse d’Avila a varié selon les traductions par Jean de Brétigny (1601), Élisée de Saint-Bernard (1630) et Cyprien de la Nativité (1667), avant la version classique d’Arnauld d’Andilly (1670). L’histoire de ces traductions se lit à la lumière des conceptions de l’art de traduire, mais aussi de l’orientation politique qui sous-tend ces traductions.
The original French reception of Teresa of Ávila ’ s writings was influenced by translations by Jean de Brétigny (1601), Élisée de Saint-Bernard (1630) and Cyprien de la Nativité (1667) before the classic version by Arnauld d ’ Andilly (1670). The history of these translations is to be read in light of conceptions of the art of translation as well as the political orientation underpinning these translations.
463This article examines the Œuvres de Sainte Thérèse divisées en deux parties De la traduction de Monsieur Arnauld d ’ Andilly (1670) in light of Arnauld d ’ Andilly (1589-1674) and the translation practices in use at Port-Royal, in order to reveal certain characteristics of this translation, which enjoyed a certain reputation in France during the Grand Siècle.
Sandra Contamina, « La corporéité thérésienne à l’épreuve de ses traductions »
L’expression de la corporéité thérésienne s’appuie sur la définition plurielle de l’image. Au cœur du discours mystique, les champs de la perception, du psychisme et du langage sont indissolublement liés. On s’interrogera sur ce que signifie « traduire les images » psychiques, sur le statut complexe de la métaphore thérésienne et sur la capacité des traductions françaises à rendre les oscillations du texte source.
The expression of Teresa ’ s conception of corporeality relies on a plural definition of the image . At the heart of mystical discourse, the fields of perception, the psyche, and language are inextricably bound together. We will investigate what it means to “translate” mental “images,” the complex status of Teresan metaphor, and the capacity of French translations to render the fluctuations and indecision found in the source text.
The inner Teresan conflict leads to the search for the appropriate, stripped-down wording in the source language, and a spiritual union through a critical approach, the approach that involves the gift of the spirit. How can this dramaturgy of the intimate be transmitted in its carnal present by a target language whose reflexivity accepts every eventuality and the ultimate authority of the word oui ?
Being forced to flee from Argentina by the dictatorship of the generals, which will decimate his family, Juan Gelman writes poems, in the decade between 1975 and 1985, about exile, in large part under the invocation of Saint Teresa, who plays an leading role in two books, Comentarios and Citas . Exile from the lost plenitude (divinity) of the mystics leads him to create: creating means producing the void so that something might appear there.
This article examines a new hermeneutical paradigm used by readers of Teresa of Ávila in Italy. Ranging from divine to erotic, Teresa ’ s works were released from 1982 to 1999 by the publisher Sellerio in Palermo thanks to Leonardo Sciascia and Angelo Morino. The works draw an unprecedented portrait of Teresa: nonconformist and precise, secular and spiritual, faithful to mystical exegesis and linguistic customs.
Rémi Mathieu, « Introduction. Les Chinois auraient-ils une âme ? »
Ce que la civilisation occidentale, monothéiste et de tradition hellénique, nomme « âme » correspond-il à ce que les Chinois appellent hun et po ? Cela ne semble pas le cas. La première a une conception spiritualiste de cette anima-psuchè, tandis que les seconds perçoivent hun-po comme une matière vivante. En Occident, l’homme possède une seule âme tandis que les Chinois pensent pouvoir en disposer de plusieurs, jusqu’à dix dans le taoïsme.
465Does what Western, monotheistic, and traditionally Hellenic civilization calls a “soul” correspond to what the Chinese call hun and po ? That does not seem to be the case. The former has a spiritualist conception of this anima-psuchè , while the latter take hun-po to be a living form of matter. In the West, man possesses a single soul while the Chinese think they have the capacity to have multiple hun-po –up to ten according to Taoism.
This work was partially translated by Alexandra David-Néel with the title Roman du bosquet des lotus . In 2013, Nicolas Tournadre produced a full version. An excerpt is presented here. In the lotus Garden, the bee Ngagnyän suffocates deep inside a lotus flower. Dabyang the male bee cannot save her: salvation is found by accepting impermanence and practicing the Dharma…
Alexandra David-Néel ’ s French translation of a poem attributed to the sixth Dalai Lama seems to shed light on his “profane” dimension. In order to transcend this dualist vision, and with an orientation toward translation, the author proposes a syntactical and lexicological reading of the source text ’ s socio-anthropological dimension.
466Daniel Negers, « Traduire la religiosité du monde hindou en français »
Sur fond de l’opposition entre pur et impur substituée au couple sacré/profane, l’article présente les rapports entre l’humain et le divin dans deux courtes nouvelles de la fin du xxe siècle traduites en français de la langue télougoue. La présentation de ces deux textes inédits vise aussi à illustrer un ensemble de problèmes traductologiques inhérents à l’étrangeté radicale qu’entretiennent entre eux les mondes télougous.
Against the backdrop of the opposition between pure and impure replacing the sacred/profane alternative, this article presents human and divine relations as they appear in two short novellas from the end of the twentieth century, translated from Telugu to French. The presentation of these two unpublished texts also aims to illustrate a set of translation problems inherent to the radical otherness that the Telugu world contains.
Every love story from Hindu India ’ s premodern era recounts the passion of the God Krishna and the young shepherdess Radha. The eighteenth-century Bengali poet Bharat Chandra Ray confers the prestige of the divine on the human while bestowing the charm of the human on the divine. In the future, translation must make manifest the myth and the realism of an earthly embrace.
467The starting point of the article is the word yûtatami , a piece of folded fabric given as a divine offering. In poetry, this word is a “pillow word,” used most often with Tamuke-yama. Tamuke-yama indicates a division between the cultivated and non-cultivated world, and yûtatami is a mediation between sacred and profane domains. The link between spirituality and love in Man ’ yôshû is one of the challenges of translation.
Jean-René Ladmiral, « Introduction. L’inconscient théologique de la traduction »
La question immémoriale du littéralisme en traduction a souvent fait l’objet d’une véritable véhémence polémique. L’auteur l’interprète comme le syndrome d’un inconscient théologique et évoque la figure problématique de Walter Benjamin. Ayant invoqué la psychanalyse comme paradigme d’intelligibilité, il en vient à critiquer le positivisme des récentes retraductions de Freud et met en cause l’impensé religieux de la modernité.
The age-old question of literalism in translation has often been the object of truly heated debate. The author interprets this as part of the syndrome of the theological unconscious and discusses the problematic figure of Walter Benjamin. Having invoked psychoanalysis as a paradigm of intelligibility, he criticizes the positivism of recent retranslations of Freud and implicates the religious unthought of modernity.
How does one translate the different poetic layers of meaning in George Herbert ’ s writing? One must negotiate between the verbal play, which tends toward a fine, evasive wit and the deliberate simplicity of its lyricism. Numerous texts consequently neutralize the uncertainty principle and, inversely, others try to make the target text “Baroque” and therefore lose the musicality of the text.
468Laurence Petit et Pascal Bataillard, « Aux confins du sacré. La traduction de Ragnarök. The End of The Gods de A. S. Byatt »
Cet essai étudie la traduction du sacré dans Ragnarök. The End of the Gods, de la romancière anglaise A. S. Byatt (Canongate, 2011 / La Fin des dieux, trad. L. Petit et P. Bataillard, Flammarion, 2014). Cet essai veut montrer comment Byatt tend à manifester poétiquement ce sacré plus qu’à l’appréhender, grâce au pouvoir jubilatoire des mots et à un intertexte foisonnant.
This essay studies the translation of the sacred in Ragnarök . The End of Gods , by the English novelist A. S. Byatt ((Canongate, 2011) / La Fin des dieux , trans. L. Petit and P. Bataillard (Flammarion, 2014)). This essay aims to show how Byatt tends to poetically manifest this sacredness more than she grasps it, thanks to the jubilatory power of the words and a rich intertext.
Sharan Kumar Subramanian, « Le sacré et le profane dans la traduction tamoule de la nouvelle“La maîtresse de mon père” de Jean Pierre Girard. une perspective dharmique »
Cette nouvelle québécoise fut traduite en 2008 vers le tamoul. L’article propose une nouvelle approche traductive se fondant sur l’herméneutique analogique, le principe de huit correspondances et l’interprétation dharmique afin de transcender les oppositions sacré/profane, sens conventionnel/contextuel, sens/effet de sens.
This Quebecois novella was translated in 2008 into Tamil. This article suggests a new approach to translation based on the analogical hermeneutic, the principal of eight correspondences and dharmic interpretation in order to transcend the oppositions between sacred and profane, conventional and contextual meaning, and meaning/effect of meaning.
469Adonis ’ poems are a testament to a poïesis that takes place in and through the body. All creation begins with awareness of the physical body. Here the poet creates a “style of being and existence,” a sacred act par excellence . Translating the sacred in Adonis ’ poetry means continuing the poetic work of nature, transmitting that undulating and temperamental energy borne by words and language.
Bahareh Ghanadzadeh Yazdi, « Traduire le sacré dans la littérature de jeunesse en langue persane »
La littérature de jeunesse iranienne et française occupant des places très différentes dans leurs polysystèmes respectifs, les difficultés de traduction du sacré de la langue persane vers le français sont nombreuses. Un échantillon de cinq romans a été choisi. La place et la réception de ces ouvrages dans le contexte iranien seront abordées. La traduisibilité de la notion de sacré sera ensuite examinée.
Since Iranian and French young-adult literature occupy very different places in their respective polysystems, there are numerous difficulties when translating what is sacred in the Persian language into French. A sample group of five novels has been chosen. The place and the reception of these works in the Iranian context will be discussed. The translatability of the notion of the sacred will then be examined.
The novel Mon nom est Rouge addresses the sacred and the profane in Ottoman painting toward the end of the sixteenth century. Miniaturists are commissioned to create a book that will contain a portrait of the Sultan done in the Italian style; however, Italian painting is considered profane. This article scrutinizes how the discourse of the sacred is constructed in the original text and in the French translation.
