  • Abstract: Politics seem incongruous in literature, like a pistol shot in the middle of a concert, according to Stendhal’s famous expression. However, literary works have succeeded in presenting political life, especially in the nineteenth century, when the structures of democratic representation were being established and the novel was asserting its place in literature as the mirror of society. Today, the practice of democracy lends itself less well to the art of the novel, which struggles to find an interest in the monotony of everyday political life.
