The field of publishing is redefined during the nineteenth century. Mérimée kept his distance from a nascent system that strove for gain and, although he did not ignore the evolution of mores, he recognized the primary role of publishers in literary life. Through the review of the writer’s Correspondance générale, the article offers an overview of the diversity of Merimee’s relationships with his publishers, as well as his direct involvement in the material realization of his books.
