The deception carried out by Mérimée in La Guzla (after Le Théâtre de Clara Gazul) made such an impression on the public’s imagination that a major aspect of the work has generally gone unnoticed: published in 1827, when Aloysius Bertrand was only beginning to formulate Gaspard de la Nuit, La Guzla is the first collection of “short poems in prose” in the history of French literature. Hugo, who inscribed the anagram “M. Première Prose” in his copy, was not mistaken.
