In Poésies, we read that “Lamartine, Hugo would not have been capable of writing the Treatise on the Intellect” by Taine. Lautréamont introduces psychological reflection into the poetry and reconciles the romantic imagination with the finesse of analysis that he recognizes in Taine. A psychomachia where the subject is the plaything of an incessant palinode, Les Chants participate in the debate on the nature and role of the self: they adopt the perspective of psychology to challenge its epistemological models.
