The crocodile appears in Ducasse’s writing as a symbol of evil and lies. Does this hearken back to an obscure work by Louis-Claude de Saint-Martin, an epic in prose and verse in which good and evil clash as allegories of the eighteenth century debate between spiritualism and materialism ? Through the figure of the crocodile, Ducasse exploits the metaphor of language as a poison.
