The aim of this Cahier is to deepen the inquiry into Giraudoux’s work by using a rarely exploited angle: cinema, which appears in his work well before he wrote two screenplays. This Cahier is organized around three axes: the presence of cinema in his work, the links between theater and cinema, and lastly the screenplays La Duchesse de Langeais and Les Anges du péché. The studies are complemented by a survey of the press and testimonies.
Keywords: Giraudoux, cinema, theater, Duchesse de Langeais, Balzac, Baroncelli, Bresson, Anges du péché.
370Aude Catteau-Sainfel, “Giraudoux in the ‘kingdom of reflections’”
It was impossible for Giraudoux, so caught up in his era’s zeitgeist, to escape the new art of cinema. His initial denigration gives way to a growing presence of cinema in his novels and plays: the narrative techniques echo different sequences of footage; theater and its mise-en-scène are obviously intertwined with the seventh art. The cultivated writer gives cinema a way to escape mediocrity by setting moving images to beautiful language.
Keywords: Giraudoux, theater, cinema, literature, relevance, style.
Alvio Patierno, « Retour d’Alsace.
Alvio Patierno, “Retour d’Alsace. A war story written with the caméra-stylo”
It can be said that well before 1931, the year that marked a turning point in his view of the new art, Giraudoux anticipated a “writing” of the visual that would come to find its expression in film. The diary of a soldier’s banal and repetitive daily life already seems to skillfully imitate the movements of a caméra-stylo. From slow-motion effects to impressionist notations, from snapshots to the breakdown of images, the symbolic magic of Giraudoux’s word performs its spell.
Keywords: narration, cinematographic writing, war story, Retour d’Alsace, caméra-stylo, Giraudoux.
Annie Besnard, “The presence of Chaplin in Giraudoux’s work”
Like many interwar writers, Jean Giraudoux was not only enthusiastic about but also inspired by Chaplin’s films. He not only refers to the filmmaker and his character Charlot, but he also uses the synopsis of The Kid to write an episode in a novel, and some scenes seem to be adapted from Chaplin’s films. The aim of this article is to explore the worlds of the writer and the filmmaker in order to highlight their similarities and differences.
Keywords: compassion, derision, humor, marginalization, society, cinema, transposition, Giraudoux.
Francesca Fichera, “Choix des Élues, from one form of writing to another”
A detailed analysis of the events of Choix des Élues (1939) will clarify not only those details that indicate Giraudoux’s interest in the new art of film, but also the points of contact with his two film scripts. These analogies shed light on the obstinacy with which Jean Giraudoux asserted the power of the writer as a legitimate contributor to the ennoblement of cinema, to which he offered, just before leaving us, a precious contribution.
Keywords: Choix des Élues, cinema, Hollywood, voice, dialogue, mirror, religion, Giraudoux.
Jean Giraudoux, Louis Jouvet, and Marcel Achard join forces on a propaganda film”
Marcel Achard, Louis Jouvet, and Jean Giraudoux participated in a film produced on the eve of the Second World War: Untel père et fils (1940–45), directed by Julien Duvivier. This patriotic saga, cowritten by Achard and starring Jouvet, was commissioned by the Commissariat général à l’information headed by Giraudoux, who, in this context, gave up the complexity of his plays in favor of a propagandistic style shared by his radio speeches.
Keywords: theater, cinema, Second World War, propaganda, cultural representations, rhetoric, authoriality, Achard, Jouvet, Giraudoux.
Vincent Zeis, “Siegfried adapted for television”
The television adaptation of the play Siegfried (1928), directed by Marcel Cravenne in 1963, is a striking and representative example of the many adaptations 373of Jean Giraudoux’s work for international television. This article shows how the theatrical form filmed for television can allow the text to become accessible and easily understandable to the public while maintaining its original form and respecting the source material.
Keywords: adaptation, theater, television, actors, sets, cutting, Giraudoux, Siegfried.
Marta Colleoni, “Undine and/is Ondine, Giraudoux’s nymph resurfaces in cinema”
Undine, a German film from 2020, is a retelling of the famous German Romantic myth that, for its transcultural resonance, deserves to be compared with Giraudoux’s play as much as with its German sources. Indeed, it is from Ondine (1939) that we can begin to trace this contemporary Undine, a “human woman by taste.” Far from the old dichotomous representation of part-angel, part-monster, this Undine is cultured, resourceful, and free to choose to kill Hans out of love for Bertram.
Keywords: Undine, Ondine, theater, cinema, woman, Giraudoux, angel, monster, retelling, myth.
Nektarios-Georgios Konstantinidis, “Balzac through Giraudoux’s eyes”
In 1942, Giraudoux collaborated as a screenwriter and dialogue writer on Jacques de Baroncelli’s film La Duchesse de Langeais, based on Balzac’s novel. His script focuses on the psychological and poetic aspect of the relationship between the Duchess and Montriveau. By simplifying and removing several references to the social context of the nineteenth century, he represents the world he knew. This article proposes to study the various problems emerging from adapting the novel to the screen.
Keywords: Giraudoux, Balzac, Baroncelli, adaptation, expressiveness, mise-en-scène, sequence, script, textualization, cinema.
Mireille Brémond, Anne-Marie Prévot, “The Duchess of Langeais in all her forms”
This article looks at Giraudoux’s writing from two points of view: that of the rewriting from one manuscript to another, from the novel to the film, and the evolution of the text; and that of style and the uniqueness of the author’s choices, in particular by looking at the treatment of Romanticism and the Baroque in his screenplay. This twofold approach highlights two discrete but essential threads: the presence of France, and a musical theme that guides the drama.
Keywords: cinema, Balzac, Duchesse de Langeais, Giraudoux, Jacques de Baroncelli, scripts, Baroque, Romanticism, couple, woman.
Philippe Ribette, “Variations on the eternal feminine and endless heartache”
This article looks at the endurance of Balzac’s eternal subject in the work of other artists. It begins with an analysis of the work of Giraudoux, who takes every liberty with the original text, expanding dialogue by reprising all or part of that which already existed. It then undertakes a comparison with Rivette, who leans toward the opposite end of the spectrum: he refuses to add scenes and goes for dryness all the way down! Giraudoux pursues his goal by addition, Rivette by subtraction.
Keywords: Giraudoux, Rivette, Balzac, love, fatality, Langeais, woman, passion, convent, cinema.
MariaCristina Pedrazzini, “An overview of the reception of Les Anges du péché by Jean Giraudoux”
This article presents an overview of the reception of Jean Giraudoux’s 1943 film Les Anges du péché, based on the press collection preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, as well as the results of a search of several sites. It is divided into three parts: 376the (anonymous) press collection from 1943; the Supplement to the press collection, bringing together articles that were not compiled in it; and the postwar period (up to 2020). A final graph illustrates the frequency with which the title appeared in the press from 1943 to 2020.
Keywords: Giraudoux, Les Anges du péché, press, cinema, dialogue, style.
Pierre d’Almeida, “The paths of Bethany”
Its founder had placed the order of Bethany under the patronage of Mary Magdalene, convinced that the contagion of purity could overcome the infectiousness of evil. The figure of the holy sinner is present in Giraudoux’s work, with themes like obsession with defilement, grace, and reversibility. While he seems to be getting closer to the faith of his childhood, he rediscovers in Le Film de Béthanie their spiritual origin, while superimposing the path of souls predestined for each other.
Keywords: Bethany, election, leper, Mary Magdalene, vanity, sin, purity, (Giraudoux’s) religion, Giraudoux, holiness.
