Why do Giraudoux’s plays struggle to find a place on the modern stage?

Giraudoux’s theater is made up of opposed ideas formulated in a literary language that directs the spectator’s imagination toward an interior action. Their architecture and language are challenging. This was remarked upon by the literary criticism of the day, and it remains a problem. Yet if we compare the theory of the plays (from the lecture given on March 4, 1931) and their reality (Judith, Ondine, Sodome et Gomorrhe), we find ourselves doubting the theorist, as these three plays are so full of dynamism and beautiful staging.
