During the tour conducted by Louis Jouvet and his Théatre de l’Athénée troupe in South America (1941–1944), Jouvet reprised five productions of Giraudoux’s plays and created a new production of a sixth one. The troupe systematically gathered as many press cuttings as possible about this French cultural presence in South America. We analyze these documents along three main lines: the critical reception of Giraudoux’s theater; the socio-intellectual profile of the audience; and the political-ideological background.
