Politesse is one of the central values of Giraudoux’s poetics and ethics, but is it an everyday practice, or a way of being for the other which involves political values? Or dans la nuit shows us a politesse that seems to be a mesh that interweaves individuals together within a shared space, an idea that converges with the political concerns of the writer. In Pleins Pouvoirs, he appeals for “a civilization of politesse,” for courtesy is at the heart of an ethics of relation to the other.
