In asking about the dictionary, we are asking about the construction of knowledge, and the relation of words to the real. Many writers inquire into words and the real, and become absorbed in directories, inventories, catalogues, and dictionaries. In Balzac the dictionary is the instrument of a politico-sociological investigation; in Flaubert, the mot juste is the one that is founded by knowledge; in Perec, the cemetery-dictionary of forgotten words poses the question of the reactivation of knowledge.
