Writing the Crusades in medieval Arabic historiography

Neither Muslim nor Christian Medieval Arabic historians conceived of the Crusades as a particularly special phenomenon. Nonetheless, they inquired about what drove Westerners to settle in the East, they learnt about the religious and political causes of their expansion, and so called for them to be opposed—all while portraying their enemies with a measure of esteem.
