Giuseppe Mascherpa, « Pratica della scrittura, grammatica della poesia.
A small anthology of poems of the Sicilian Poetic School, copied in Bergamo in the sixth or seventh decade of the 13th century, was recently discovered in a notarial parchment kept at the “A. Mai” Library. This precious discovery enables us to re-examine the question of the early circulation and reception of topics and forms of Sicilian courtly poetry in northern Italy, twenty years after the finding of an ancient fragment of a Sicilian poem marked by linguistic features of East Veneto. This paper is a preliminary study of the language of these texts: its main aim is to analyse the approach taken by the copyist (who is likely to have been a notary) to the new poetic code, giving a description of the constant interference/interaction between the poetic language, the vernacular of Bergamo (which was the mother tongue of the copyist) and the universal gramatica of the Latin language.
Elisa De Roberto, « Glossari, versioni e proverbi.
Through the case-study provided by a miscellany of the second half of the 15th century, that contains Humanist works, a Latin glossary, some exercises in translation and a series of rhyming Latin and Vernacular proverbs, this paper aims to examine the instruments employed in late medieval language education. The manuscript G.II.17 (Genova Biblioteca Universitaria) is a product of Lombard Humanism and of the cultural environment of the Umiliati. This source allows us to analyze the textual typology of materials used in linguistic teaching; it also enables us to evaluate the aspects of continuity and novelty of this production compared to that of the previous century. Special attention is given to the relationship between Latin and the Vernacular, as well as to the structure of the vernacular employed. The language seems to reflect, on the one hand, an advanced process of “koineizzazione”, and on the other hand, the persistence of a high degree of polymorphism, especially in certain features.
Camillo Castiglione, Baldassarre’s firstborn son who lost his mother when he was only three years old, grew up in Mantua under the care of his grandmother Aloisia Gonzaga. His father, engaged almost full-time in relentless diplomatic activity in Rome on behalf of the Gonzaga family, undertook to educate the child from a distance, and through his correspondence he suggested tutors, teachers, riding instructors and clothes for the young Camillo. These letters reveal real traces, both domestic and pedagogical, of his desire as pursued in the Cortegiano to form a perfect courtier from the very earliest years of his life, as they offer advice on the elegance of one’s dress, the posture to be used on horseback, and the behavior to be adopted on official occasions, as well as advice on linguistic education, the importance of Greek and good pronunciation of the vernacular. This study includes the publication of Camillo’s first letter that has come down to us (1524, April 15), as an example of a child’s letter-writing style that can be seen to be already influenced by the phonetics and morphology of Tuscany.
This article presents an edition of various autograph letters written in 1494 by Giulia Farnese and her mother-in-law Adriana Orsini Mila that were addressed to Pope Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia), as well as a linguistic analysis of the main graphic, phonetic, morphological and lexical features of these letters. Following on from a study carried out by the same scholar in 2004 on the language of correspondence addressed to the Pope by Lucrezia Borgia and her mother Vannozza Cattanei, this article aims primarily at providing a further useful tool for reconstructing the varieties of written language used by women between the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; it also represents an opportunity to undertake a broader consideration of the practice of writing and the acquisition of reference models by female members of the Roman papal court at the end of the fifteenth century.
Andrea Musazzo, « Scribere condecenter vulgare.
This article seeks to clarify the relationship between notaries and the Italian language in the 16th century, through examination of the particular situation of Vercelli. Study of the notarial acts drawn up in this city, combined with analysis of the papers regulating the admission to the college of notaries, reveals the presence of the Italian language in notarial activity even before the Ordini nuovi issued by Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy. These documents raise questions about the linguistic
education of notaries and invite us to reflect upon the function of the formulary and other means by which they could learn how to write in the vernacular. The editions of the Summa rolandina translated and expanded with brief notations on grammar were new ways of disseminating the Italian language, showing the long-standing link between grammar and ars notariae, a link which would continue at least until the 18th century, when grammar was still considered as the basis of notarial culture.
This article is a discussion of examples in Italian vernacular grammars in the 16th century, with a particular focus on their educational perspective. The tradition of the Italian grammar whose rules were based on the authority of the “Three Crowns” originated in Fortunio’s Regole; in the Compendio, which was dedicated to a young man who must learn the language, Flaminio cuts down on examples; among the compendia and the grammars inspired by the Prose of Bembo, some are simple “riduzioni a metodo”, others are works more independent of their model, based on the principle that authors should be read “con giudicio” (with discernment); in Giambullari’s grammar we can also find exempla ficta; the canon would widen in the second half of the century. Grammarians based their rules on literary examples and, from teaching perspective, authors’ examples both constitute a means of learning and offer concrete models of writing.
This article analyzes the spelling and orthoepic patterns that exist in the two main books used for studying Italian in Spain during the 16th century : the Vocabulario de las dos lenguas toscana y castellana, written by Cristóbal de las Casas (1570), and the Arte muy curiosa por la cual se enseña muy de rayz el entender, y hablar la Lengua Italiana, written by Francisco Trenado de Ayllón (1596). These two texts are compared in order to underline their similarities and differences in terms of both content and argument. This comparison focuses in particular on the linguistic reference pattern and the description of Italian phonemes – in particular those which have no equivalent for Spanish speaking people – and the corresponding way in which they are spelt. This study also takes into consideration other texts of the same period, published both in Spain and in Italy, and takes into account the fundamental differences in historical and cultural development that led to a definition of the linguistic norm in these two countries.
Salvatore Cosentino, « Banking in Early Byzantine Ravenna »
The fifth century saw an increase of the monetary mass in circulation, both in gold and copper coins, all over the Mediterranean regions of the later Roman world. Such a phenomenon seems to be paralleled by a renewal of financial activity. In fact, it is exactly in this period that our sources reveal the presence of an articulated terminology when referring to people involved in banking and money-changing activities. With regard to sixth-century Italy, this study aims to investigate the class of the argentarii, which is well documented especially in Ravenna. Moreover, it will focus on some rare examples of maritime loans that can be found in Italian sources.
The coinage of Ravenna from the reconquest over the Ostrogoths to 751 documents the decline of the provincial finances and economy. Seat of the Italian praefect, it was
for a while responsible for producing all the gold denominations and continued to issue small silver coins on the Ostrogothic model. Like bronze, these were widely used north of the Alps and in the Adriatic ports. Siliquae imitations have been found in Byzantine Liguria and in the Po valley, early habitat of the Lombards. Through the late sixth century, Ravenna struck coins in sizable quantities in all three metals. Gold was used for payments to the Lombards and the Franks, as is known through texts and coin finds in Central Europe. In the late sixth century, insecurity and increased territorial fragmentation, coupled with the isolation and financial autonomy of the mint led to irregular and limited issues of gold coins whose distribution area receded. Bronze regained some importance in the second half of the eighth century. Its value differed from that of the Constantinople follis, which barely penetrated into the exarchate. Between 650 and 751, Ravenna coins circulated only in the natural hinterland of the city, the North-Adriatic zone and its Alpine frontier while a major role in minting was now being held by Sicily.
This paper discusses the (in)famous passage of Theophanes’ Chronographia dedicated to the fiscal policy of Emperor Leo III in Southern Italy, focusing on the vexata quaestio of the global or partial increase of the taxes demanded from Sicily and Calabria. Having examined both the chronology of the measures and previous theories that have been put forward to explain this passage, highlighting their limitations and/or incompatibility with what we know of the Byzantine tax system, the author proposes a new hypothesis, stressing the administrative consequences of Leo III’s simultaneous monetary reform. The alleged increase of the tax burden was nothing more than the result of paperwork, as the same taxes were simply labelled in a new currency of lesser value, hence leading to a nominal increase in the dues.
The Byzantine occupation of Apulia and Basilicata (theme of Langobardia, then catepanate of Italy) lasted from the end of the 9th to the second half of the 11th century, in a period of economic growth. The imperial authorities tried to build a new urban network, in order to resettle inhabitants and to manage the province. They collected direct taxes in the centre of the theme in the 11th century. They supplied imperial coins, in particuliar to pay the salary of military and civil servants and the roga of dignitaries, thus trying to create a local aristocracy, but this flow ceased with imperial domination. The economic action of the Empire was therefore important, but somewhat transitory.
The history of Calabria from the late sixth century to the eighth century has yet to be written. Recent study of works such as the Liber Pontificalis must be reexamined in the light of local facts, and the hagiographic accounts, subjected to critical analysis, likewise allow the issue to be revisited. The Empire defended the southern end of the Italian Peninsula against the Lombards until the Beneventan duchy transferred its territorial ambition towards the north in the 730s. Byzantium was primarily interested in the mineral resources of the province, but other kinds of industry also played an important role in the Calabrian economy, such as the production of amphorae for the wine export trade. These manufacturing industries depended on the exploitation of rich woodlands. In order to control this wealth, Constantinople was in conflict with Papacy, this conflict only ending when Leon III transferred the jurisdiction of the bishoprics to the patriarcate of Constantinople. Even if the decline in population and economic recession reached their peak at the beginning of the eighth century, the period that followed was characterized by a level of political stability that was conducive to rational exploitation of Calabria’s wealth.
Given that the written sources concerning the rural organization of Byzantine Calabria are somewhat limited in number, this obliges us to look at the plateae, a form of documentation peculiar to Norman Calabria and Sicily, in order to re-examine the issue of the Byzantine status of the peasantry. These lists of men (jarâ’id in Arab-speaking Sicily, katonoma in Greek-speaking Calabria) were established by the public authorities (the count, the king), usually so as to give them to vassals or religious institutions. Beyond the important differences that distinguish Sicily and Calabria, their plateae attest to the continuous power of public authority, as conveyed by both the Byzantine and Arabian traditions; as well as showing that they were produced for the same purposes, that is to control space, to stabilize population, and to levy taxes. By considering both formal criteria and the status of the peasantry, we can assume that these plateae, in Norman Calabria, show the continuity of various fiscal principles between the Byzantine and the Norman period, thus shedding new light on the complex situation of Byzantine paroikoi.
Based on new sources, which have become available thanks to the publication of private Greek legal documents from the Archivo Ducal de Medinaceli (Toledo), this essay aims to study the rural society of hellenophone Southern Calabria – in particular, the region of the Straits, with the insular town of Messina at its centre – in the form in which it appears at the end of the 12th century. Being both significant and performative, the practice document records a wealth of data as rich and varied as the body of social and economic relationships that it attemps to formalize. The specialized language of the juridical act and its formulary, which does not avoid the use of stereotypes but rather exploits the possibilities of stereotypes and their variants, allows us to examine the impact of Norman power and its administration on a community based on Byzantine rite and private law whose language remained Greek during the whole of the 12th century. Estate transactions, agreements and exchanges, platee, cognomina, titles and functions, all of which were expressions of a new way of organising society, invite us to investigate the relations between the agents concerned – the former owners, belonging to the italo-Greek élite, the peasants, the ‘men’ of the monastery, the archimandrite and the central power. What was the land tenure, what rural habitat did the definitions of boundaries outline, and, above all, what kind of dominion did the monastic institution exercise over its lands? These are some of the questions that this essay will seek to answer by widening out its scope to encompass the region of Messina that was under the economic sphere of influence of the Archimandritate, this later being renowned as one of the wealthiest lords of the Kingdom of Sicily in the Norman period.
Enrico Zanini, « Economia dell’Italia bizantina e indicatori archeologici : qualche ulteriore riflessione »
Fifteen years after the appearance of a first general study on the impact of Byzantine rule on the economy of some Italian regions in the early Middle Ages, this paper seeks
to develop our thinking on three main themes : the economic role of the Gothic war; the role of Byzantine power in separating the economy of the two Italies (Byzantine and Lombard); and the role of the macro-economic Mediterranean system (6th to 8th c.) in defining the relationship between commerce and the state-controlled economy.
The originality of the religious movement of the mulieres religiosae from the thirteenth-century Southern Low Countries lies largely in a sociability born of unusual spiritual powers that were developed among these “young” people. An approach based on showing the intersection of gender and age allows us to gain a greater understanding of the role of these atypical devout women in society and in the Church, and their relationships with each other. The Vitae and the exempla devoted to these religiosae mulieres show that social hierarchies were constructed and continuously renegotiated depending on the individuals involved.
This paper discusses George R. R. Martin’s literary saga, A Song of Ice and Fire, and its now famous adaptation as a TV show, Game of Thrones. Critics have been keen to underline the “realism” of these cycles; but the authors of the present study seek to re-examine what kind of real is being represented and re-created here. Which Middle Ages are we talking about? Far from being a unified historical block, the Middle Ages are a rich and complex period, marked by many evolutions. The world created by Martin thus merits close analysis : which elements are being used or left out, and which play a crucial or marginal role in the story? Such questions will allow us to gain a better understanding of how Middle Ages are represented today.
