This state of the art is divided in three parts. A preliminary section addresses general questions about the nature, origin and functioning of French tenses. The second part is about systemic approaches of tense and presents the models proposed by Reichenbach, Vet and Guillaume / Bres. The final part concerns textual and pragmatic studies of tense. Starting from the work of Benveniste and Weinrich in the 1950s and 1960s, we deal with questions currently highlighted by pragmatics, with special attention to the link between tense and textual functioning.
