George ­Sand’s “spectacle in an ­armchair” Between “scène ­historique” and dramatic poetry

Sand’s first two plays, Une conspiration en 1537 (1831) and Aldo le rimeur (RDM, 1833), belong to the genres of the “scène historique” and the dramatic poem respectively. This article first examines the possible reasons for these genre choices in the context of the 1830s, then the subversive potential of the two plays, between the representation of violence and the demand for freedom, finally drawing from these considerations some principles of a purely Sandian dramaturgy.
