  • Abstract: Hoffmann’s tale The Nutcracker and the Mouse king first appears in The Serapion Brethren, framed by a debate about what makes a children’s story unique. The text enters France separated from the original story collection ; it is rewritten by Dumas in 1844. Comparing the versions by Hoffmann and Dumas makes it possible to reflect on the problematic nature of tales for children : the tale could very well ultimately belong to a genre about childhood.
