  • Abstract: Translated nine times in the nineteenth century, Hoffmann’s Nutcracker only really entered the repository of Russian culture in 1892 with Tchaikovsky’s adaptation. From the start, the composer makes it a children’s cultural work without betraying the ambiguities of the German storyteller’s poetics. The richness of the musical and dramatic work can be viewed in light of the analysis offered by the critic Belinsky in 1840 in the first major Russian theoretical text on youth literature.
